Should Progressives In Ghana Not Get Our Nation To Move Beyond Neoliberalism?

Having alas evolved into a selfish society underpinned  by a dog-eat-dog cultural ethos, which is governed by a super-ruthless vampire-elite, the fact that our country needs radical transformation if it is to continue remaining relatively peaceful and stable, cannot be gainsaid.

And, as a people, if we continue to refuse to come out of the shadow of conventional economic thinking, we will see our country's natural capital destroyed before our very eyes, by a predatory private-sector peopled mostly by crooked and wealthy  entrepreneurs determined to divvy-up our nation's wealth amongst themeselves, at society's expense - and to the detriment of future generations of our people.

In light of that,  creative Ghanaians who do lateral-thinking and are Progressives must become Ghana's thought-leaders and confront the destructive, prevailing economic orthodoxy (purveyed by the hard-of-hearing lackeys of  neoliberalism in our our midst), which is slowly but surely destroying our collective future.

That is why this blog recommends that all  Progressives in Ghana who can afford it, should travel to the UK and attend the Positve Money Hammersmith meet-up, for which the invitation to attend below was emailed to me earlier today, and for which reason I am posting it as a blog post for today.

Ghana's Progressives must arise and help change Ghana for the better, by adopting the ideas for a new paradigm recommended in the published work of Laurie Laybourn-Langton and Michael Jacobs from the UK's Friends Provident Foundation, which is the topic for the said Positive Money Hammersmith meet-up.

Dear Kofi,

We are pleased to invite you to an upcoming event in Hammersmith!

Moving Beyond Neoliberalism

"New year, new life, new economic paradigm! Time to ditch the Neoliberal economic model and embrace the idea of paradigm change."

It's not us, PM Hammersmith, who advocate such a bold move, but Laurie Laybourn-Langton and Michael Jacobs from the Friends Provident Foundation.

The paper they recently published, ‘Moving Beyond Neoliberalism', is going to be the subject of our next meet up. In it, the authors make the case that Neoliberalism has reached the end of the road and it’s time for all the progressive-minded people (academics, NGO’s, think tanks, and campaigning groups - including Positive Money) to get their acts together and instead of pursuing piecemeal reforms tackle the task of completely overturning the neoliberal economic paradigm.

This will require co-ordination and strategic thinking, qualities rather lacking in the progressive landscape.

After clarifying the concept of paradigm change with a brief history of how economic paradigms (Liberal, Keynesian and Neoliberal) succeded one another, we will delve into discussing whether or not the progressive forces stand any chance of catching this once in a lifetime opportunity to make use of the providential winds of change blowing from the Far East….or whether they will leave the initiative to the Right.

Whatever your point of view, you are welcome to join the debate – Costanza Picchioni, co-organiser of PM Hammersmith, will lead the discussion as usual.
